I’ve thought hard about the best way to get a demo out to the world. Though unity is fully capable of building a web-based version, theres a few downfalls to going that route, namely the lack of full screen mode, an unalterable resolution, and of course, load time. At this point, Stellar is getting a bit big – a little too much to expect people to sit there on slower connections and wait for load times just to play a demo.
Fortunately, theres other options. I’ve had some issues with Indiecity when it first debuted because of my choice in development tools (unity was causing some issues with their installer), but I’ve been assured the kinks were worked out. With any luck, The demo and the full version of the game will be available there shortly, and this should also be a great way to handle version control.
Indiecity is certainly not Steam, but in going this route I can make sure the game is received as intended before going through the hassle of integrating Steamworks (and thats IF I get accepted to Steam at all – theres no guarantees).
There’s still more work I’d like to do to lengthen the campaign mode of Stellar, but I figured this would be the best time to get some real feedback. If all goes well, I’ll be posting the link to the demo downloader and game sale option here soon. Thanks for keeping up with my little project. :)
